The Benefits of Reclaimed Wood

As a Master Certified Green Professional company, we always look for sustainable building solutions and materials. One material we like to use in our projects is reclaimed wood.

Reclaimed wood has been previously used and has since been repurposed. It can come from places like old barns or buildings and can be used for accent walls, countertops, flooring, and much more.

Using this wood keeps the demand for new lumber down and keeps large, bulky items out of landfills, which is excellent for our environment.

Using wood that has been reclaimed has increased in popularity in the last few years and is a sustainable option for your home renovation.  Whether you’re doing a complete remodel of your kitchen or adding on to your master suite, reclaimed wood can be easily incorporated into the design.

Here are a few other reasons to consider including reclaimed wood in your home remodel or build.

Creates a unique aesthetic

Reclaimed wood has a story that will give your home a unique, hard-to-replicate aesthetic. It is often imperfect, which will add to the character of the space you’re remodeling. These one-of-a-kind markings can serve as a focal point in your space that you can build upon.

If nothing else – since each piece of wood has its own story and history, it can be a conversation starter when the conversation lulls during a family gathering.

It’s highly durable

Not only is reclaimed wood sustainable and full of character, but it is also a highly durable home material. Wood that has been reclaimed tends to have higher density than the new lumber you can find at the hardware store, and it is not uncommon to find reclaimed wood harvested centuries ago.

Since this aged wood is of better quality than other materials, it is the perfect addition to high-traffic areas that would otherwise get worn down. So, don’t be afraid to use it as flooring in your hallway or living room, where your kids or pets like to play and make a mess.

Versatility in design

Reclaimed wood doesn’t only work in a rustic-style space; it can blend into just about any design. You could use it for beams in a Hacienda-style living room, a floating mantle in a farmhouse-style home, or an accent wall in a chic, ultra-modern space.

Overall, regardless of the style you’re hoping to achieve, reclaimed wood can be easily integrated.

Reduce the risk of indoor air pollution

If you purchase reclaimed wood from a trusted source, it can help reduce the risk of indoor air pollution.  Many other materials available today contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can expel harmful toxins into your home.

Since authentic reclaimed wood products have been tested to ensure they meet chemical emissions standards, you won’t have to worry about your family breathing in chemicals.

Whether you want to use reclaimed wood for its environmental benefits, or you just like the way it brings life to a space, we are here to help you with your project.  Give us a call so we can talk about your current home and how you’d like to improve it.
