Adding Natural Elements in Bathroom Design

Bathroom design for 2023 includes pastel color walls and unique tile work

Bathroom design has transformed from a small, functional space into a personal sanctuary. We first started seeing spa-like bathrooms in the late 1990s.

People brushed the spaces off as just another trend, but here we are twenty–plus years later, and this “trend” is more popular than ever.

However, the all-white, sterile-looking bathroom is now being traded in for warmer, natural elements that create a sense of tranquility. Here’s how to integrate natural elements into your bathroom.

Stone

Stone is a highly versatile and durable material that can be used throughout your home. Whether you choose travertine, marble, or slate, stone will make your space look luxurious and easy to maintain.

Flooring may be the obvious choice for stone, but it works well on the walls, too.  A stone accent wall behind the bathtub or using it to tile the shower will create a dramatic focal point in your bathroom.  We really like the appearance of stacked stone on the wall which could make the space look like you’re outdoors.

Wood

Wood is a versatile material that can be a source of inspiration for your bathroom design. Its warmth and texture can be incorporated in many ways, from flooring to cabinetry, and even on the ceiling. Even small touches of wood, like wooden shelves or mirror frames, can spark creativity and make a big impact on your bathroom design.

Wooden vanities and cabinets made from oak or bamboo are known to be highly durable and moisture-resistant. Using these materials for the storage components of your bathroom will pair nicely with the stone tiles used in other parts of the space. We also love using live edge countertops in the bathroom to create a unique piece to center the rest of the design around.

Plants

Houseplants are underrated and should be used in more spaces throughout the home. They purify the air, create a calming feeling, and add character and color. If you’re brand new to houseplants, look for plants that are easy to care for at first before graduating to more temperamental plants. Also, look for plants that do well in humidity. Some ideas are snake plants, orchids, and pothos.

Choosing planters that complement the rest of the bathroom is the key to integrating them into your space. You could consider hanging plants near the windows or placing a tall plant in the corner to make the room feel a bit more tropical.

Incorporating natural elements like stone, wood, and plants into your bathroom will allow you to bring the outdoors in and create a tranquil environment where you can unwind after a long day. Whether you use these materials to make a bold accent wall or just to warm up the space, your new bathroom will be transformed into a beautiful oasis that may become your favorite room in the house.
